The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer was to make a deal with the Mexican drugmaker to allow its generic rivals, such as Lilly ICOS, to make their generic versions of Viagra. The two companies have both introduced their own versions of the erectile dysfunction drug to patients in the United States. Pfizer, however, will not be allowed to sell generic versions of Viagra, but it will be allowed to sell its own version. "The question now is, what is the price of the generic?" asked Pfizer's Dr. Philip Morris, who is also the medical director at Pfizer's New York office.
It's not the first time Pfizer has made its own version of Viagra, which is sold in packs of six tablets and taken on an empty stomach at the same time each day. However, Pfizer has also introduced a number of new generic versions of the drug, such as the popular pill, called sildenafil, and it is available in generic forms. "There are also generic versions of the Viagra that are not available to patients," Dr. Morris said, noting that the drug has not been tested in the United States since 1998. "There are no generic versions of Viagra."
The drug company has also introduced its own version of Viagra, which is sold in packs of two tablets and taken on an empty stomach at the same time each day. Pfizer, however, will not be allowed to sell generic versions of Viagra, but it will be allowed to sell its own generic version, or vice versa, as long as it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
In a statement, Pfizer stated that the company will not approve generic versions of Viagra, but will allow its own version of Viagra to be sold in packs of three tablets and taken on an empty stomach at the same time each day. "Pfizer believes that the availability of generic Viagra in the United States will provide a competitive advantage for consumers and allow them to choose the generic version that is best for them," said Pfizer spokesman Frank Halle, adding that it is not the first time Pfizer has introduced a generic version of the drug. "We also have a number of other generic versions of Viagra, such as sildenafil and tadalafil, that are available in packs of three tablets," said Pfizer spokesman James McEwan. "This competition will be strong."
But Pfizer is not the only pharmaceutical company to be facing similar questions, including one that has been in the news for the past several years, after it was found to be marketing a product to boost sales of a diabetes drug called Riociguat, which is said to increase the chances of a heart attack. "We are aware of reports of patients experiencing side effects from drugs that contain the active ingredient in Viagra and other medications for erectile dysfunction," Pfizer said in the statement.
Pfizer is not the only pharmaceutical company to be facing similar questions in the news.Pfizer has been the first to report that its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra has been pulled from the U. S. market, after it was found to have caused a significant number of deaths in patients who had taken the drug. Pfizer and Lilly are both the largest companies in the world with about $1.5 billion in annual sales.
Last month, a judge in New York ruled that Pfizer's Viagra product was not safe and should be allowed to remain on the market.
The drug company has also been in the news for the past several years, after it was found to have caused a number of deaths in patients who had taken the drug. Viagra has not been tested in the United States since 1998.
